As UK salmon brand Sea Smoked launches what it says is the UK’s first completely plastic-free, commercial smoked salmon line this month, co-founder and managing director Dan Pawson told Undercurrent News it expects to see rapid sales growth.
While its initial launch has been with high-end UK retailer Booths, it is already in talks with “most of the major retailers”, who are “all very interested”, he said. “Right now all supermarkets are having to pledge to move to become more plastic-free, so it’s a big opportunity.”
Sea Smoked is backed by industry veteran Jonathan Brown and, like snack product Sea Chips, is produced at Brown’s Grants Smokehouse plant in Cumbria, using materials designed by Pawson’s firm and to its specifications.
One way he hopes to see more listings secured is through supplying own-brand, plastic-free smoked salmon to retailers.
“As we speak [retailers are] reviewing, tasting samples. We’re pitching and presenting that we can do this as own-label too — we have the facilities thanks to Jonathan, we’ve developed the materials and we’re the only ones with the rights to use them.”
