LETTER: Plastic pollution needs to be talked about more frequently – Asbury Park Press


I read with interest your Sept. 2 article, “Floating balloons are animal killers” and I would like to add that plastic pollution in general is a major threat that needs to be addressed more openly.

I think it’s so important to talk about this now because New Jersey has just passed a plastic ban bill that will take effect in 18 months banning many businesses from distributing single-use plastics. I urge everyone to promote and adhere to this ban. Due to COVID-19, many stores and businesses have not been allowing reusable bags or containers under the claim that it is more sanitary to use plastic.

Likewise, many people have been buying more disposable products during these times to stay safe, many of them plastic. However, a study put out this summer shows that reusable bags are just as safe as plastic in terms of contracting COVID-19. Since COVID-19 is already producing plastic waste in the form of disposable gloves, cleaning supplies and masks, it is so important that we work on limiting our plastic consumption where possible.
